Algarve welcomes Formula 1 and MotoGP™!

2020.08.15

The Formula 1 World Championship will return to Portugal on the 25th of October, 24 years after the last race and the MotoGP™ World Championship will take place on the 22nd of November, both races will be held at Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão.

The Algarve race track is truly unique, with its characteristic elevation changes and undulating layout earning it a reputation as a high-speed rollercoaster – a thrill ride for fans and competitors alike.

Formula 1

The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Portugal will be staged between the 23th and the 25th of October, the last time that F1 came to Portugal was in 1996, in Estoril.

Formula 1 had initially been scheduled to start on the 15th March in Australia, but the race was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The succession of cancellations has opened the door to the use of new circuits in the second half of the Formula 1 World Championship season, such as the Mugello circuit and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

MotoGP™

The MotoGP™ World Championship will take place at the stunning Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, with the event set to take place from the 20th to the 22nd of November and become the season finale. The track will now welcome MotoGP™ back to Portugal for the first time since 2012’s race in Estoril.

The three remaining flyaway races on the provisional schedule in Malaysia, Thailand and Argentina had been cancelled for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Algarve circuit at Portimao is MotoGP's official reserve circuit and is expected to feature on future calendars, potentially alternating with Valencia as the season finale.
